From the Pastor's Heart
Rescued from Captivity One of the preoccupations of the news this week has been with the rescue of the three women, in Cleveland, Ohio, who were missing for a decade or more. They were found in a home not far away from the varied homes from which they had been abducted. They were abducted during their teens or early 20s. The rescue was made possible when one of the women was able to get to a partly sealed door and was able to scream to attract the attention of some of the neighbors. Neighbors said they heard someone kicking at a door, yelling for help and trying desperately to get outside the house.
One neighbor, Charles Ramsey, who is called the hero of the rescue operation, said he saw Berry, whom he didn't recognize, at a door that would open only enough to fit a hand through. He was eating his McDonald's, but came outside and saw the young woman “going nuts trying to get out of the house." She asked him to call 911. He thought it incredulous at first, but when the woman announced her name and told that there were two other captured women inside the house, he got involved, and the police came.
The report is that crowds gathered on the street near the house as the police activity proceeded to rescue the women. A 6-year-old girl was also found at the house. It is believed she is a child for one of the women, but the relationship is not yet being released. Three brothers are arrested for abducting the women and holding them as hostages. A sigh of relief is now heard in Cleveland, after a decade of captivity these women are now free and will be going through a long process to stabilize and rebuild their lives.
While this news of rescue is fresh on our minds we are to think of the sad saga of the hundreds of youths being abducted across the country, and around the world, each year. The News Media might glamorize names like Elizabeth Smart, Brian Hunter, and Shawn Hornbeck and a few others, but the list of the abducted is long. And the tales are sad indeed. If I never accepted the reality of demonization, I would have to accept it now. Those who are perpetuating these crimes are demonized human beings. These persons are among the worst of criminals.
While reflecting on the abductions too, we need to remind ourselves that the abduction of humanity is a reality, and that the reason Jesus Christ came into the world and went to the cross was to rescue us. The story is recited from Genesis to Revelation. In Revelation 20 it states that there is to be a last battle in which the devil will seek to deceive the nations and gather them to capture the saints of God, and the City of God. Then fire will come down from God out of heaven and burn the devil and his host.
Thank God for such outcome, for apart from it, I would count my journey on earth nonsense. If I did not believe this were the truth, I surely would not want to be a child of God.
